I'm more of a couch potato than I would like to admit. There is nothing like sitting down on the couch after a long day and getting absorbed into someone else's day while you forget about your own. If you caught episode #5 with Lisarah Simonson, you'll remember our conversation about representation in the media. While we don't have a say in what gets created and who gets cast, we certainly do have a say in whether or not we watch. When we support media that is intersectional, we are telling Hollywood that we want similar media. So when you find a movie or a TV show that represents values that you support, then you better support that TV show, and support it loudly! Alternatively, if a big ticket movie comes out and is grossly misrepresenting a community, celebrating misogyny, or is in someway not inclusive, don't watch it. Don't buy it. Don't support it. We may not have a lot of say in what gets made, but we sure have a say in how we respond to it. That being said - nothing is perfect. Most of these have elements that I love in addition to some things I would like to see improved. So I'll cover the good and the bad! 5. Madam Secretary Madam Secretary is a political drama about Elizabeth McCord who is chosen to be the Secretary of State by the president following the death of the previous Secretary of State. There are a few reasons why I like this show, but there are also a few reasons why I almost didn't include it. So here's the good and the bad: The good:
The bad;
4. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel I've mentioned this one before on the blog - but I just can't help it! I love this show! Here's the good and the bad. The good:
2. Orange is the New Black This is the dramatized version of Piper Chapman's real life experience in a woman's prison, 10 years after she did a money run for her drug-dealing girlfriend. The good:
1. Jane The Virgin "Sounds just like a telenovela, right?" If you're not already watching Jane The Virgin, there is no time like the present! A modern day telenovela set in Miami, following the journey of a young catholic woman who is accidentally artificially inseminated at her annual check up. It's dramatic, it's romantic, it's corny, it's funny, and.... IT'S INTERSECTIONAL! There are a million reasons why I support this show. Here are a few:
If you're not sold, it's also very funny. So there you have it! What are your favorite feminist TV shows? Like I said, I'm a couch potato, so I wouldn't mind a few recommendations!
